Originally drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 29th round of the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft, Cavan Biggio instead decided to forgo professional baseball in favor of attending the University of Notre Dame. He would play baseball for the Irish from 2013-2016.
In 2016, the Toronto Blue Jays would select Biggio in the fifth round of the 2016 draft. He would agree to sign with the team for $300,000 and would report to the minor leagues. While in the minor league system for the Blue Jays Biggio, the son of Hall of Fame player Craig Biggio, would combine with two other sons of former major league players Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette to form a highly touted trio of prospects.
All three players would be called up to the major leagues for the Blue Jays to make their debuts in the 2019 season. Biggio would make 354 plate appearances for Toronto, with a .234 batting average, 16 home runs, 48 runs batted in, 66 runs scored, and 14 stolen bases.
Additionally, he would hit for the cycle on September 17, 2019, becoming the first rookie and the third player in Blue Jays history to hit for the cycle. In doing so, he would join his father as only the third father-son duo in Major League Baseball history to both hit for the cycle in their careers.
Biggio is slated to be the Opening Day starting second baseman for the Blue Jays this season, as he looks to improve upon what was an impressive rookie campaign. If he is able to raise his batting average from last year, the sky is the limit in regards to his potential. It will certainly be fun to watch the youngster in his first full season in the big leagues.
