By Matt Clark
With Notre Dame’s softball team’s 6-2 victory over Duke, head coach Deanna Gumpf hit a major coaching milestone, notching her 750th career victory.
The Notre Dame softball team has been blessed to have Deanna Gumpf as their head coach for almost two decades now. During that time, Gumpf and the Lady Irish have a plethora of accomplishments on their record.
They have been the Big East regular-season conference champions seven times(2002-2005, 2010, 2011, and 2013) and the Big East Conference tournament champions four times (2002, 2003, 2006, and 2009).
In addition to winning championships the Notre Dame softball coaching staff has been the NFCA Regional coaching staff of the year five times (2002, 2004, 2014, 2016, and 2017) and the Big East coaching staff of the year four times (2002, 2004, 2011, and 2013).
Gumpf was named the 2014 Alliance of Women’s Coaches Bigger Picture Award winner as well as the 2014 NFCA Donna Newberry Perseverance Award winner. As a result, Gumpf is no stranger to awards and accolades.
With the 6-2 victory by Notre Dame’s women’s softball team over Duke today, Gumpf added another milestone to her prestigious career, as she hit the 750 career wins. Gumpf has almost doubled her win total since taking over sole possession as the winningest coach in Notre Dame softball history when she recorded her 378th win in 2010.
She and Notre Dame’s legendary women’s basketball head coach Muffet McGraw are the only two coaches in Notre Dame sports history to record over 700 career wins at the University. Next year Gumpf will embark on her 20th season coaching the Lady Irish and does not look to be slowing down her winning ways.
The Lady Irish softball team ran their record to 11-5 on the season with their win against Duke and look to continue their success when they take the Blue Devils on again in a matchup tomorrow afternoon in game two of a three-game road series.
