Notre Dame lacrosse: 5th ranked Irish lose to 7th ranked Maryland
By Matt Clark
In what was anticipated to be one of the toughest games on the schedule for the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team, the #5 Irish would lose 14-9 to #7 Maryland.
The 5th ranked Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team faced perhaps their most difficult challenge of the year when they faced the 7th ranked Maryland Terrapins in an away game this afternoon. The Irish would make it a competitive game against Maryland, but would ultimately fall short in the contest, losing by a score of 14-9.
The most glaring difference in the game was the number of shots taken by each team. Maryland outshot Notre Dame by a total of 64 to 31. Despite Maryland having more than twice the number of shots as the Irish, the Terrapins were only able to get 30 of those shots on goal, a testament to the strength of the Irish defense.
Tewaarton Award preseason watchlist candidate Bryan Costabile was the only Irish player to tally more than one goal in the game, scoring two goals and assisting on another in the game. Freshman attacker Pat Kavanagh netted one goal and added an assist for Notre Dame, as did Griffin Westlin and Brian Willetts.
Other Notre Dame players to score a goal included Quinn McCahon, Tommy McNamara, Mikey Drake, and Stephen Chase. Sophomore midfielder Jake Moss added an assist in the game for the Irish as well.
Freshman goaltender Liam Entenmann did his best to give Notre Dame a chance to win, saving 16 of the 30 shots he faced on the day. The 30 shots were by far the most that Entenmann has faced in his young collegiate career.
Maryland attacker Logan Wisnauskas led the way for the Terrapins, scoring five goals for them. Jared Bernhardt and Kyle Long each scored two goals for Maryland, while goaltender Logan McNaney saved 10 of the 19 shots he faced.
Notre Dame looks to rebound in their next game against Denver who is currently ranked 14th in the nation. The game will be next Saturday, March 7th in South Bend.
