Former Notre Dame DT Sheldon Day signs with Indianapolis Colts
By Matt Clark
Yesterday it was reported that former Notre Dame defensive tackle Sheldon Day had agreed to a one-year contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
Former Notre Dame defensive tackle Sheldon Day has been signed by the Indianapolis Colts. With the signing, the Colts have signed both starting defensive tackles from the San Francisco 49ers Super Bowl team, as they signed DeForest Buckner earlier in the free agency period.
Originally drafted by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, Day has been a member of the San Francisco 49ers since signing with the team in 2017 after being waived by the Jaguars.
Last season Day recorded 15 total tackles, with one sack, and one stuff with the 49ers. He served as part of a defensive tackle rotation in defensive coordinator Robert Saleh’s defensive scheme in San Francisco.
The signing represents a homecoming for Day, who is an Indianapolis, Indiana native. Day attended Warren Central High School in Indianapolis and has remained an active contributor to the Indianapolis community throughout his career.
Day is expected to be an integral part of the Colts defensive line rotation that includes Buckner, Denico Autry, Tyquan Lewis, and Grover Stewart. It is likely that Buckner leads that rotation in snap count and is followed by Autry and Day.
There will be a familiar face awaiting Day upon his arrival in Colts camp, as former Notre Dame football teammate Quenton Nelson is an offensive guard with Indianapolis since being drafted by the Colts in 2018.
Expect Day to be highly motivated not only by playing in front of his hometown Indianapolis crowd but also by the fact that he is on a one-year “show me” contract with the Colts. He could parlay a big season into a large payday next offseason.
