Fortune

Fortune, the former Notre Dame player who became the groundskeeper, was another mentor and often times the voice of reason in Rudy’s life. He kept Rudy in check from the start, with the iconic line “you’re not suppose to be here” — and he wasn’t. That was the point of the whole movie: a kid trying to fit in somewhere where he didn’t belong, only to eventually be accepted.

Fortune gave Rudy a job and a play to stay. The access he gave Rudy allowed him to train by running in the concourse and utilized whatever practice equipment was around the stadium.

Without everything Fortune did for and said to Rudy, our main character likely doesn’t make it through school, let alone make the walk-on team.

His powerful speech to Rudy about not needing to prove anything to anyone holds up as one of the most inspirational scenes in movie history. And as we see in the final scene, Fortune saw Rudy’s triumph as his own in a way — redemption for the mistake he made years before.
