Roland Steele

The All-American corner was fictional, but he was instrumental to the storyline. Arguably the most talented player on the team, he was quick to defend the less-talented Rudy when teammates would tell Rudy to “dial it down.”

Steele was also the ring leader when it came to the famous and controversial “jersey” scene, where he essentially organizes a mutiny where every player turns in their jersey and tells head coach Dan Devine that Rudy can dress in their places. The scene did not happen, but as far as the movie goes, it is one of the most important sequences.

Finally, as team captain, it was Roland Steele who called for Rudy before the Irish ran onto the field to face Georgia Tech. He told Rudy to lead the team out onto the field, which alone would have been a fine ending to the story.

Roland Steele was an All-American, and he acted like it.
