The New York Post is reporting that Drew Brees has agreed to join NBC following his retirement and will be the game analyst for Notre Dame football games.

In a move that will excite many Notre Dame football fans, the New York Post is reporting that future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees has agreed to join NBC in the broadcast booth when he decides to retire from the National Football League.

What does this mean to Notre Dame football fans? While the reports indicate that Brees is being groomed as an eventual successor to Chris Collinsworth as the game analyst for Football Night In America, he is reportedly going to begin initially as the game analyst for NBC broadcasts of Notre Dame football games.

The move would likely spell the end for the current game analyst on NBC broadcasts of Irish games, Doug Flutie. Flutie has drawn the ire of many hardcore Notre Dame fans who believe that he has a negative bias against the Irish due to his time as the starting quarterback with Boston College, where he played against them in a number of “Holy War” battles.

It remains to be seen what the feelings of Drew Brees are towards Notre Dame, given that he is an alumnus of Purdue University, which was largely overshadowed by Notre Dame despite both universities being located within the state of Indiana.

The 41-year-old Brees is likely to join the current play-by-play man Mike Tirico in the booth when he decides to retire from the NFL. This past offseason, Brees signed a two-year contract extension with the New Orleans Saints worth $50 million.

Brees was rumored to have strongly considered retiring this past offseason and despite the two-year contract is believed to be eyeing retirement following the 2020 NFL season. The 2006 Walter Payton Man of the Year Award winner is well respected not only for his incredible NFL career but for the immense amount of charitable work that he has done off of the field during his professional career.

If the news of Brees joining the NBC booth does in fact spell the end of Doug Flutie’s tenure as the Notre Dame game analyst, it represents the end of a role that began in 2014 for Flutie. Despite receiving a lot of flak from some Notre Dame fans, Flutie has done a respectable job in his role as a game analyst on NBC broadcasts of Notre Dame games.

Regardless of which side of the fence you are on in regards to the job that Flutie has done, Irish fans are likely to have at least one more season with Flutie at the helm. It will be interesting to see how things play out moving forward as NBC transitions from one legendary quarterback to another in the booth.
