Notre Dame football: Irish land offensive lineman Pat Coogan
By Carlee North
Notre Dame landed 2021 offensive lineman Pat Coogan Wednesday night. The Irish offered Coogan on March 26th and he instantly became the front runner.
It was the offer, Pat Coogan, been waiting for, being from Chicago, and honestly, it seemed like any offer that came his way wasn’t going to compare for him. He even added several huge offers right after Notre Dame from LSU, Oklahoma, Ohio State, and Texas A&M. In the end, it didn’t matter.
He was bound to wind up in blue and gold and he ended up pulling the trigger even with all the uncertainty in the world right now. Offensive coordinator Tommy Rees and offensive line coach Jeff Quinn did a great job wrapping this one up quickly. Coogan holds 28 offers and many from big-time programs like the ones mentioned above.
What will Coogan bring to Notre Dame?
The 6’5″ and 290-pound offensive lineman has the ideal size and skills for playing inside at the next level. He has an edge to him that really stands out and has a motor that won’t stop until his guy is in the dirt.
He has excellent body control to stay low and hold his own and he moves his feet effectively in pass protection. What I really like to see along the line, especially if you don’t pop off the screen as a physical freak, his football IQ and I consider Coogan as a solid “IQ guy” on the field and something he seems to take pride in.
He probably won’t stand out as a top tier athlete either but as long as he continues to improve on his movement, mainly in the run game and pulling and focuses on his power coming off the ball he could be a solid inside player for Notre Dame. He fits the Irish mold both on the field and off perfectly and I expect him to give everything on the field for the Irish, which is always something you love to see from players. It will be extremely hard to not root for Pat Coogan once he gets to campus.
With Coogan’s commitment, he is now the 8th pledge in the class, joining elite offensive lineman Blake Fisher as the second lineman in the class. The staff is probably looking to add at least two more guys on the line and are putting everything they have into the few players at the top of their boards, there’s no doubt about it. Now we just have to wait and see if that pays off for the staff.
