Notre Dame football: San Francisco 49ers sign Chris Finke
By Matt Clark
After failing to be drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft, former Notre Dame wideout Chris Finke signed with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted free agent.
The Slippery Fox was once thought to be a species only native to Dayton, Ohio, and South Bend, Indiana. However, after the San Francisco 49ers announced that they were signing former Notre Dame wide receiver, Chris Finke, to a $95,000 undrafted free agent contract yesterday, it became clear that the Slippery Fox would now be running wild in Central California.
The deal between the NFC Champion 49ers and Finke was a fairly lucrative one for an undrafted free agent. Typical undrafted free agent deals are typically in the range of $1,000-$15,000. The $95,000 that Finke fetched indicates that his services were in high demand. Last year, former Baylor wide receiver, K.D. Cannon received the highest contract of any undrafted free agent at $45,000 guaranteed. That should give proper insight as to how highly the 49ers valued the services of Finke.
This doesn’t come as a surprise to most Notre Dame football fans who witnessed the progression that Finke made from a walk-on at South Bend to a player who was offered a scholarship, named a starter and eventually a captain for the Irish.
Finke stands as a beacon for the blue-collar player who achieves the pinnacle of success through hard work and determination. The 49ers will be getting a player with a huge heart, strong drive and determination, and a whole lot of character.
It’s likely that Finke will end up being a depth piece at wide receiver for San Francisco who thrives primarily as a slot receiver. More than being a depth piece at wideout, Finke brings a great deal of experience as a special teams contributor, including as a punt returner, a role he held during his time with the Irish.
Finke will be joining a familiar face in San Francisco as former Notre Dame Fighting Irish teammate Mike McGlinchey was drafted by the 49ers last season in the first round of the NFL Draft.
