Notre Dame Football: How can Irish draft prospects improve their stock?
By Andrew Hall
Shaun Crawford – Cornerback – Graduate Student
When Crawford stepped on campus, his Defensive Coordinator was Brian VanGorder and Notre Dame Stadium did not feature a massive video board. A lot has transpired since the Cleveland, Ohio product first strapped on his gold helmet. Unfortunately for Crawford, several injuries are among the things that have occurred during his 6 years in South Bend.
Prior to the 2015 season, Crawford tore his ACL, ending his Freshman year. He projected as a key cog in Notre Dame’s defensive structure in 2015. After showing his incredible playmaking skills in Austin, Texas in 2016, he suffered another season ending injury against Nevada.
Not to be denied, Crawford returned again. This time, he was able to make it through an entire season without significant injury. Crawford recorded 32 total tackles, 1.5 sacks, 7 PBUs, 1 forced fumble, 2 fumble recoveries and 2 interceptions. His season was highlighted by punching the ball out of LJ Scott’s hands at the goal line in Lansing, Michigan.
The momentum gained in 2017 was quickly erased by another pre-season knee injury. This past year, Crawford fought off a dislocated elbow to tally 28 tackles and 1 interception.
Many assumed that Crawford would try to play in the NFL after 2019 while he was still physically able. However, in January, he announced that he would petition the NCAA for a 6th year of eligibility.
What can Crawford do to improve: Despite his size and injuries that limited his athletic potential, Crawford continues to make plays. He possesses a rare blend of heart, determination and instinct. Regardless of what Crawford does this season, he is unlikely to hear his name called in NFL Draft. No team doctor would advise drafting a player who had 3 season ending injuries in college. Perhaps, this is why Crawford decided to return and play meaningful minutes in major college football. His recoveries are inspirational. If anyone could find a way to make an impact in the NFL after so many setbacks, it would be Shaun Crawford. It is just highly unlikely.
Projection: Undrafted Free Agent
