Mills is the next in a long line of talented Stanford quarterbacks. He was a highly-touted high school recruit out of the greater Atlanta area. He was a five-star recruit on both 247 and Rivals and was rated as the top pro-style quarterback in the country in the 2017 class.

The 2020 season will be Mills’ first year as the team’s clear starting quarterback. After virtually no playing time in his first two seasons, he finally had an opportunity to showcase his talent in 2019.

Mills entered last season as the backup to KJ Costello. However, due to a slew of different injuries, Costello was only able to play in five games. As a result, Mills started six games for the Cardinal and saw some action in two others.

He finished the season with 1,960 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Despite being a backup quarterback, there were no training wheels for Mills when he was called into action. In his six starts, he threw the ball a total of 222 times, which gave him a respectable average of 8.1 yards per pass attempt.

The play of Mills last season was strong enough to create a quarterback controversy heading into the offseason. Ultimately, Costello decided to enter the transfer portal following the conclusion of the regular season, and Mills moved to the top of the depth chart.
