Notre Dame football added to its class of 2021 on Monday afternoon, landing Joe Alt, an offensive lineman from Minnesota.

Notre Dame has landed a commitment from 2021 offensive lineman Joe Alt out of Minnesota Monday afternoon. The Irish offered back in May and seemed to jump right into the top group quickly.

Alt’s father played football at Iowa and his brother played hockey at Minnesota, so fending off both of those programs was a win in itself for Notre Dame. The staff thinks Alt is a potential multi-year starter and they‘ve definitely been treating him as such. Offensive line coach Jeff Quinn did a nice job here building a great relationship with him. Alt decided to pull the trigger on Notre Dame and wanted to suit up in blue and gold on Saturdays

Alt holds a handful of offers, but this was always going to come down to Notre Dame, Minnesota and Iowa for this legacy lineman.

What will Joe Alt bring to South Bend?

The 6’7′, 260 pound lineman is versatile. He actually plays a ton of tight end in high school, but his body and frame definitely will fill out to be a offensive lineman in college. He will obviously have to add some weight to his frame but he has the skill set to be really really good. Alt moves really well for his size, has great quickness off the ball, and adds solid balance that really helps at the point of contact. His long arms and reach really gives him the upper hand among a lot of offensive tackle prospects in the class. I’d consider blocking being a strong suit for Alt, specifically in the run game. Once he continues to study the position more, work on his game, and perfect his hand placement with more reps consistently, he could turn into a big time tackle for Notre Dame, which is exactly what the Irish pride themselves on.

With Alt’s announcement, the Irish now have 12 commitments in the class of 2021, split down the middle with six on offense and six on defense. Right now, Alt joins Blake Fisher and Pat Coogan in the offensive line room for the class but the staff could definitely take two more guys along the line and I think that eventually happens when it’s all said and done.

Next. Some thoughts on Notre Dame's nickname. dark

Until then, it’s good to see the staff get some positive momentum on the offensive side of recruiting. It definitely hasn’t been easy the past few months, especially with everything going on around the world but it’s a nice step in the right direction for the offense.
