Notre Dame Football: Who was defensive player of the game against USF?
Notre Dame football took to the field on Saturday, delivering a dominant defensive performance against USF, winning the game 52-0.
The Fighting Irish looked very dominant on Saturday against USF, winning 52-0. One storyline heading into the game was that the would be missing a handful of defensive players including Marist Liufau, Shayne Simon, Kyle Hamilton, Tariq Bracy, and Ovie Oghoufo. This gave fans a little reason to worry, but the Irish proved even the backups could hang with the lesser USF.
Honorable Mentions
Houston Griffith
While DJ Brown did earn the start over Griffith, the later played well on Saturday. Finishing the game with a total of five tackles — one of which was for a loss. Notre Dame’s DB depth proved to be pretty strong with both a starting safety and starting cornerback out on Saturday. As I mentioned previously, USF is not a good football team by any means, but Notre Dame’s backups played well none-the-less. For a full breakdown of Griffith’s stats from Saturday, click here.
Clarence Lewis
The true freshman earned his first career start on Saturday with Tariq Bracy being unavailable for the game. Lewis proved that he has what it takes to be a great player at the college level. Lewis totaled five tackles — one being for a loss — along with three pass breakups. The future is bright for this young cornerback. For a full breakdown of Lewis’s stats against USF, click here.
Isaiah Foskey
The sophomore showed up again, earning his spot in the honorable mentions for the second time this season, in just as many games. This is a guy who will help continue Notre Dame’s pipeline of DE to the NFL. On Saturday, Foskey finished with two tackles — with one of them being a sack. Defensive Player of the Game
Jack Kiser
Even though he started the season on the scout team, it would be a surprise if the rejoined the scout team after his dominant performance on Saturday. Kiser was fantastic in his first career start. He finished the game with a total of eight tackles — two of which were for a loss. After his performance on Saturday against USF, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him remain as the starting buck linebacker for Notre Dame. Of course, Marist Liufau and Shayne Simon, along with Jack Lamb will all fight for playing time as well. This is one of many positions for the Irish with a great deal of depth. Look for Kiser to be much more of a contributor for the remainder of the season regardless if he stays as the starter. For a full breakdown of Kiser’s stats against USF, click here.
