Notre Dame Football: Play that changed everything against FSU
By Andrew Hall
After a lengthy COVID-19-induced hiatus, the Notre Dame football team defeated an improved but still building FSU team.
As predicted by many members of the media and the Irish coaching staff, the Notre Dame football team struggled to put together a consistent 60-minute performance against an inferior Seminole squad.
Ultimately, the culture built by Brian Kelly since 2016 overwhelmed a Florida State team still trying to find its identity. The momentum shifted back and forth throughout the game.
A 65-yard run by sophomore running back Kyren Williams got the Irish going after an early fumble by the aforementioned Williams. Freshman Chris Tyree burst through for a 45-yard touchdown scamper that gave Notre Dame a two-score lead. But, one play made all of the difference on Saturday night.
Florida State continued to threaten the Fighting Irish despite having a constant two-score lead. New Seminole quarterback Jordan Travis led his offense down to the Irish 5-yard line with approximately 8:30 left in the contest.
If the ‘Noles punched in another touchdown, Notre Dame’s lead could have been cut to 8 points with a successful 2-point conversion. Graduate student Shaun Crawford had other plans.
Crawford embodied all of the qualities that Notre Dame needed for a successful return to the field. He demonstrated grit, focus and flexibility. After winning the free safety position at the conclusion of fall camp, Crawford found himself back at the cornerback position due to graduate student Nick McCloud and freshman Clarence Lewis being limited in practice.
As Travis threw into the flat in an attempt to find Keyshawn Helton, Crawford jumped in front of the pass and intercepted it. By the time he returned the ball 23 yards, Crawford had ended the threat posed by Florida State. Notre Dame drove inside the Seminole 5-yard line before turning the ball over on downs, essentially ending the game.
Crawford’s interception changed the complexion of the game and ended any Florida State threat. He and the Notre Dame football team return to the field next week against Louisville at 2:30 pm in South Bend.
