Notre Dame Football ranked No. 2 in latest Amway Coaches Poll
By Brad Weiss
In the latest Amway Coaches’ Poll, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came in at No. 2 overall, a two-spot jump after their win against Clemson.
Saturday night was a special night for the Notre Dame football program, as they played host to No. 1 Clemson inside Notre Dame Stadium. What ensued was an instant classic, as the teams battled back and forth, and eventually the game went to overtime.
In overtime, star running back Kyren Williams scored twice, and the Notre Dame defense came up with a huge stop at the end of the game to give the team a 47-40 victory. That is the kind of win that could propel the Fighting Irish to the College Football Playoff, and in the recent Amway Coaches Poll, they were rewarded for their efforts against the Tigers.
Notre Dame ranked No. 2 in latest Coaches’ Poll
The latest Amway Coaches’ Poll was released on Sunday, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish came in at No. 2 overall, up two spots from last week. The Irish jumped both Clemson and Ohio State, this on the strength of Notre Dame’s incredible win against the Tigers on Saturday night.
Senior quarterback Ian Book shook off what looked to be a devastating fumble to lead his team to the overtime victory, getting the job done with his legs, and his arm. He played like a guy who has been under center for this team for four seasons, and it is a veteran like that which could be a difference if the Fighting Irish get into the College Football Playoff.
In addition, the offensive line played great, the Irish got timely receptions from guys like Avery Davis and Michael Mayer, and Williams showed that he may be the best overall running back in the country.
Notre Dame closed out their season with three road games in their final four contests, but they are all against unranked opponents. The Clemson game was their biggest hurdle until the ACC Championship Game if they can get there, but their win on Saturday could have punched their ticket to the CFP, even if they fall short of winning the ACC title.
