Notre Dame Football at Boston College Eagles Review: Studs and Duds

Studs

Ian Book

Book was the steadiest presence for the Notre Dame football team on Saturday afternoon. Despite a few hiccups, Book never wavered in his performance. He threw for 283 yards and three touchdowns on 20-of-27 passing. Book added 85 yards and a score via ten carries. In total, he accounted for 368 total yards and 4 touchdowns against Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec amassed 306 total yards and 2 scores in a much less efficient fashion.

Ultimately, Book’s performance probably dictates the ceiling for the 2020 Notre Dame Fighting Irish. If he continues his recent pace, the Irish should have a chance to make and compete in the College Football Playoff.

Ben Skowronek

Part of Book’s development is tied to the progress of two players: Javon McKinley and graduate transfer Bennett Skowronek from Fort Wayne, Indiana. His three touchdown receptions were probably a pleasant surprise for the Irish coaching staff.

The wide receivers have accounted for a surprisingly low amount of red zone touchdowns. Clearly, it was a point of emphasis for first-year offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Brian Kelly

Kelly avoided a historic letdown and navigated another potential trap on the 2020 slate. This victory against Boston College marked the 100th victory for the 11th year Irish head coach. If anyone was asked in December 2009 at Kelly’s introductory press conference whether he would lead the Irish to 100 victories, almost everyone would have signed up.
