Duds
Notre Dame’s ball security
The Irish fumbled thrice on Saturday: a botched handoff between Book and freshman running back Chris Tyree, a fumble from Williams and another from Skowronek. The most concerning of the three fumbles is that from Williams.
On the season, he has lost three fumbles out of four total in eight games. This ranks near the top (or bottom depending on how you look at it) of all FBS players. So far, the mistakes have not cost the Irish. As the season progresses, it could be the difference between winning an ACC championship or national title and not.
Phil Jurkovec
The ABC broadcast noted how determined and angry Jurkovec was in his desire to beat the Fighting Irish. This summer, he posted on social media insinuating that Brian Kelly was blocking his waiver to play immediately. The drama culminated in a less than impressive 45% passing performance for 272 yards.
Jurkovec threw an interception right into the hands of Jack Kiser and should have been picked by Kyle Hamilton who failed to finish the deal. Jurkovec probably has a bright future in Chestnut Hill. Yesterday just was not his day for revenge.
Notre Dame onside kick coverage
Like the lack of ball security, Notre Dame’s inability to recover onside kicks could haunt them in the future. Teams are definitely going to continue to attempt it. So far, penalties have saved the Irish in 3 different onside kick occasions. Notre Dame special teams coordinator Brian Polian needs to find a solution before this dooms the Irish.
