Notre Dame Football: Ian Book disrespected in PFF’s quarterback rankings

Taking a deeper dive

There were eight quarterbacks from Group of Five teams ranked ahead of Ian Book on this list. What level of competition have those quarterbacks faced this season? Were their grades weighted down due to the quality of their opponents? It does not appear so.

I think most people can agree that the most relevant games for evaluating Ian Book are the most recent games. In his last two games, Book has completed 64 percent of his passes while throwing for 593 yards and four touchdowns. He also ran for 152 yards and a touchdown in those games.

Understandably, the author wants to take a look at a larger sample of games to determine his final rankings. However, in a season that has been affected by the pandemic, not all teams have played the same amount of games.

There are eight players ranked ahead of Ian Book who have played four games or fewer. So my question to the author would be, “Why are you fine with evaluating a smaller sample of games for those players, but not for Ian Book (in the last two games)?”
