Notre Dame football: 5 reasons Ian Book should return next season

Reason No. 2: Win Heisman Trophy & break records

Despite leading Notre Dame to an 8-0 start with a victory over No. 1 Clemson, Book is not among the most likely Heisman contenders. According to ESPN’s Heisman, Florida’s Kyle Trask is the front-runner for what has become the best statistical quarterback season award.

Book is not even listed in their poll.

With many of the quarterbacks on this list moving on next season, Book would have the opportunity to compete for the Heisman Trophy. If Book could compile better statistics with the aforementioned receivers, his statistics would be more in line with the numbers that are consistent with a Heisman winner.

Book is also closing in on several major statistical categories in the Notre Dame record books. Right now, he ranks third in career passing yardage, second in passing touchdowns, second in quarterback rushing yards and fourth in career wins.

By the end of the season, Book will likely be in possession of 2nd place in careers passing yards, 2nd in passing touchdowns, 2nd in quarterback rushing yards and 1st in career wins. Another season in South Bend would leave him as the top quarterback in every major statistical category.
