Notre Dame football: 5 reasons Ian Book should return next season
Reason No. 5: Notre Dame needs him
Frankly, with Book’s departure, Notre Dame is left with a less than ideal quarterback situation. Right now, junior-to-be Brendan Clark would be the presumptive starter. Drew Pyne and highly recruited prospect Tyler Buchner will also compete for the starting spot.
These three players bring a lot to the table. Clark flashed his skills during fall camp. Pyne has received praise from Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly for his ability to process information and pick up the playbook. Buchner might be Notre Dame’s savior according to some experts and many fans.
Regardless, if any of them start in 2021, there will be growing pains. Many of Notre Dame’s quarterbacks over the past two decades had extensive experience prior to becoming the Irish starter. Everett Golson and Brandon Wimbush had not seen extensive action prior to becoming the opening day starter.
Book returning to Notre Dame would allow the coaches to continue to develop the trio of quarterbacks that will be on campus in 2021. With the departure of many offensive linemen, the Irish would benefit from an experienced signal caller like Book.
Regardless of any of these reason, it would be great to see Book in blue and gold in 2021. It is just not going happen. Probably.
