Notre Dame football: 4 best potential College Football Playoff matchups

Texas A&M Aggies

The last time Notre Dame won a major bowl game was the 1994 Cotton Bowl, where they beat Texas A&M 24-21. It’s been 26 years since that game, but if these two teams meet again in the 2020 College Football Playoff the Irish will have an excellent chance to beat the Aggies and end their major bowl win drought.

That’s because if Texas A&M makes the College Football Playoff they’ll be of the worst teams to make the Playoff since its inception.

The Aggies are in a position to make the Playoff because of other teams’ deficiencies rather than their own strength. The caught Florida on a bad day, and surprised the Gators early this season. Other than that they were blown out by Alabama, and managed to beat the rest of their schedule. The issue is that the rest of their schedule has been largely unimpressive.

Their quarterback, Kellen Mond, is also not good enough to win come Playoff time. After three seasons of waiting on Mond to take the next step, he has finally played to his potential. It’s just that his potential maxes out as a competent starter. He’s not an elite talent. He’s not a legitimate NFL prospect. The Irish defense can contain him, and keep the Aggies down.
