There have been plenty of legendary quarterbacks in the history of Notre Dame football, but Ian Book will stand alone with his next victory.

Notre Dame football star quarterback Ian Book went into the team’s matchup against No. 19 North Carolina on the precipice of history. Sporting a 28-3 record as the school’s starting quarterback going into Friday, Book needed one more win to join a rare group of signal-callers who have led the Irish program.

For the season, Book has been magnificent, and his play on Friday against North Carolina should have bolstered his race for a Heisman Trophy. He has signature wins, signature moments, and while his statistics do not jump off the page, leading Notre Dame to an undefeated record also holds merit when it comes to the voters.

Next weekend, the Irish will take on the Syracuse Orange, with Book having a shot at history.

Book one win away from the school record for wins

With the victory over the Tar Heels, Book racked up his 29th victory as the starter in South Bend, becoming the fourth Irish quarterback to do so. He joined Tom Clements, Ron Powlus, and Brady Quinn with 29 wins at Notre Dame, and he can stand alone with a win Saturday over the Orange.

That should not be a tough task, as Syracuse is one of the worst teams in the country, and go into today with only one win this season. Book and the Irish are one of the best teams in the country, are in the race for an ACC title, and possibly a national championship before all is said and done.

In what is likely his final season on campus, Book has his team headed towards a spot in the College Football Playoff and is in control of an offense that can score points in bunches. Due to COVID-19, he could actually return for another go-around next season, but that is unlikely, so let us enjoy what time we have left with No. 12 under center.
