Notre Dame football: Offensive position grades vs. North Carolina

Wide Receivers and Tight Ends

Braden Lenzy and his explosive speed, was supposed to be the deep threat for Notre Dame this season. Largely due to injuries, that never truly materialized, and for the longest time, Notre Dame had no deep threat at all.

However, Javon McKinley has done a great job at developing into that deep threat. He had a big day at North Carolina, going for 22.5 yards per catch and leading all receivers on either team in yards on the day.

Another great revelation has been the rise of Ben Skowronek, who lost time due to a hamstring injury. That hamstring injury caused a lot of Notre Dame’s issues at wide receiver this season, because it meant Notre Dame started the season without a wide receiver that Book could trust to always get open.

The Irish weren’t perfect, however. There were a couple of frustrating drops and the odd play where no one got open, forcing Book to take a sack or innovate. But, for the most part, this was an excellent day from the wide receivers and tight ends.

McKinley led the way through the air, with six catches for 135 yards. Meanwhile, Michael Mayer‘s four catches and 54 yards led the tight ends. For his part, Skowronek grabbed three for 34, but also had 13 yards and a touchdown rushing.
