Notre Dame football: Offensive position grades vs. North Carolina
Notre Dame football: Offensive position grades vs. North Carolina
Offensive Line
This was the biggest challenge for the Notre Dame offensive line to date, and not just because North Carolina is talented in the defensive front seven, which they are, but because two key linemen were down for the game. Center Jarrett Patterson is done for the season, a devastating blow to the line’s communication and scheme. Adding to that, it was also revealed that right guard Tommy Kraemer would be unavailable due to an appendectomy.
This threw two inexperienced, though extremely talented players into the fire; Joe Lugg and Zeke Correll. Luckily, they played confidently and effectively for the Irish, opening up holes for Kyren Williams and giving time for Ian Book to throw.
There were certainly issues, like a bad snap inside the five yard line, which Book and Williams turned into a touchdown.
North Carolina also managed to hurry Book six times and sack him twice, though those sacks were coverage sacks. However, even with all of those mistakes, given the difficulty of the situation their performance is worth of recognition.
