Notre Dame football: New faces having a huge impact in 2020

Michael Mayer, Tight End

I mean, duh.

The true-freshman out of Kentucky has lived up to the hype coming out of high school and has become one of the biggest weapons thus far for Ian Book and this offense.

“Baby Gronk” is second on the team in receptions (25), yards (301), and receiving touchdowns (2). His ability to contribute in the run game has been a huge plus as well, which, like Kyren Williams’ pass protection, is sometimes difficult for freshman or younger players.

Michael Mayer’s size and athleticism make him the definition of a mismatch nightmare. Multiple times this season he has been able to catch a shallow crosser and stiff-arm or hurdle his way to a big gain.

I can only imagine Tommy Rees is scheming up more plays to Mayer’s strengths going forward. We saw this last week vs North Carolina where Mayer had a few catches up the seam/vertically downfield that had been missing from this offense.

Outside of a few drops, Mayer has been a huge bright spot for the offense this season and has all but ensured the “Tight End U” nickname will live on in South Bend. Thank goodness we get to watch him in an Irish uniform for two more years.
