FanSided did an excellent job on their FanSided250 rankings, but the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fans were ranked way too low in college sports, and overall.

The Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team has recently capped off an undefeated regular season, clinching a spot in the ACC title game against the Clemson Tigers. The last time these two teams played was a month ago, with the Irish beating the then-No. 1 ranked Tigers, and absolute bedlam occurring inside Notre Dame Stadium.

The absolute love for this program is very real, and it spans the globe, as they are one of the more iconic brands in all of sports. Their fandom knows no bounds, and no matter where you live, there are certain to be numerous fans of everything Notre Dame as your neighbors.

That is why when FanSided released their FanSided250, a ranking of fans in every category, from sports, to pop culture, to even individual celebrities, the fans of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish appeared underrated.

Notre Dame should have been ranked higher, much higher

In a list of 250 of the most popular fandoms in the world, Notre Dame’s fans were ranked at No. 90 overall, and No. 11 in college sports. While both numbers are a bit low in terms of where they ranked, it is the college number that really stood out to me.

Notre Dame athletics as a whole produces some of the more legendary players and coaches in all of college sports, and their prowess on the field is matched by the passion of their fan bases.

To be ranked below the likes of Clemson, Alabama, and Ohio State is one thing, but Oregon? Auburn? These are programs that have had their moments in the sun, but Notre Dame is college football.

Also, the Women’s Basketball program just saw their legendary coach retire after making a yearly stop in the NCAA tournament, and outside of football, the school has produced 14 national titles across their other sports.

The aforementioned Tigers of Clemson were given the top spot in terms of the college ranks, so maybe a win against them in the ACC title game could pump the rankings up next year. Also, the Women’s Basketball team has an elite recruiting class coming in, the Men’s Basketball team has some nice up-and-coming stars, and the hockey team is one of the best in the country.
