Notre Dame Football: 2020 Offensive regular season awards

Most Valuable Player

Ian Book’s true value will probably be realized next season when another quarterback takes the field for the Fighting Irish. His calm, steady demeanor and his playmaking ability make him one of the best players in college football.

Early in the season, it did not look like new offensive coordinator Tommy Rees would get the best out of the graduate student. During the first four contests of the year, he averaged only 178.5 passing yards, tossing three touchdowns in those four games.

The Irish offense was floundering.

But, after Brian Kelly inspired his club to reach for the next level, Book and the Notre Dame offense exploded. In the final six games, Book averaged 334.5 yards of total offense. He added 14 total scores during that period. The Irish went from averaging 33.25 points to averaging 40.7 points per game.

Book saved his best performance of the year for Notre Dame’s toughest opponent. He threw for 310 yards and rushed for 67 yards in the biggest win for the Irish in 27 years. During the season, Book became the winningest quarterback in Notre Dame history. He has an opportunity to become the greatest quarterback in program history if he can win three more games.
