Notre Dame football earns No. 4 spot in the College Football Playoff

Despite the loss to the Clemson Tigers on Saturday, the Notre Dame football team has punched their ticket to the College Football Playoff.
The Notre Dame football team went into their ACC Championship Game against the Clemson Tigers riding high, as they boasted the longest winning streak in the FBS, and had already beaten Clemson once. After a solid start, the wheels fell off for the Irish, and in the end, Trevor Lawrence and company dominated throughout.
After the blowout loss, rumblings could be heard that the Irish could be left out of the College Football Playoff, a place they seemed destined to be in with a loss or a win before the game. However, they looked bad on both sides of the ball, appearing severely overmatched in the 34-10 loss.
Luckily for Ian Book and his teammates, the committee looked at the overall picture, and not just one moment in time, naming them as the No. 4 team in the College Football Playoff.
Notre Dame’s body of work earned them the No. 4 spot in the CFP
Outside of the embarrassing loss on Saturday, the Irish are one of the top-four teams in the country when you look at their entire body of work. They were able to beat the No. 1 team in the country during the regular season, using double-overtime to defeat Clemson, and then went on the road and won big games against North Carolina and Boston College.
For the Irish, they will have to go back to the drawing board if they hope to advance past the semifinal round, where the best team in college football awaits them. The offensive line was atrocious on Saturday, as Book had to run for his life the entire game, and against the Alabama Crimson Tide, that will be disastrous.
While it is certainly an honor to make the College Football Playoff, the fact is, they will be taking on No. 1 Alabama in the Rose Bowl, which is quite a daunting task. Notre Dame looked terrible against Clemson Saturday night, and if they play the way they did against the Tigers in the Rose Bowl, it could get ugly very early.
