Notre Dame football will try to change the narrative in the CFP
By Brad Weiss
Notre Dame football has struggled in big-time bowl games as of late and will try to change the narrative against No. 1 Alabama in the Rose Bowl.
The Notre Dame football team nearly completed a perfect season heading into the College Football Playoff, losing badly to the Clemson Tigers in the ACC Championship Game. Heading into that game with the thought they would get into the CFP no matter what, the terrible showing cast doubt on that heading into Sunday, when the committee announced the final four teams.
Well, as we all know, Notre Dame got in as the No. 4 seed, beating out Texas A&M, and will now take on the No. 1 team in the country in the Alabama Crimson Tide. For Notre Dame, this is an opportunity to change the narrative surrounding the program when it comes to big games, and they have the right blend of young and experienced players to do just that.
The Irish will have ten days to prepare for Alabama, and they will need every single one of them.
Notre Dame outscored by 144 in their last six BCS or New Years 6 games
Looking back, the Irish have had more than enough trouble in big bowl games, and many believed they only got into the CFP due to the fact they are Notre dame. Since 2000, the Irish have been outscored by 144 points in six appearances in either the BCS or a New Years’ 6 game, with their last showing being a 30-3 loss to the Clemson Tigers in 2018.
Ian Book and company will look to change that narrative on New Years Day but will need a much better showing than the one they had in the ACC title game. Alabama will be coming into this game fired up after missing out on the College Football Playoff last year and have the talent to run through this playoff.
The Rose Bowl will not be an easy task by any means, but the Irish do a lot of good things on both sides of the ball and have a defense that is much better than the one that took the field against Clemson. Also, they are still banged up along the offensive line, so hopefully, the time off will give them a chance to get healthier, and put together the right gameplan to make this one interesting to ring in the new year.
