Notre Dame football lost a few transfers on defense

Looking at some of the players who have thrown their name into the transfer portal, and you would expect that the Irish could suffer in terms of depth next season. The Irish are fresh off their third straight ten-or-more win season, and the hope is that the level of talent can continue to close the gap between them, and teams like Alabama and Clemson.

At linebacker, Ovie Oghoufo and Jack Lamb will be leaving the program, but the program is also bringing in some great talent at the position this fall as well. Oghoufo does not have a real spot in the current defensive scheme, and while he could have gotten some work at the vyper position, he was not going to start.

Lamb did start for the Irish back in 2019, but he suffered an injury to his hip that hindered him the rest of the way, so hopefully, a fresh start will help him in 2021.

In the defensive backfield, head coach Brian Kelly has brought in some incredibly talented cornerbacks in this draft class, so the loss of guys like Isaiah Rutherford and Houston Griffith is not going to hurt as much, either. These are guys who have given a lot to the program and will be missed, but the fact is, the talent coming in outweighs the talent that is leaving.
