Looking Ahead to 2021 at quarterback
Brendon Clark apparently had some nagging knee issues this season that may have limited his reps in practice. As a result, redshirt freshman Drew Pyne leaped him on the depth chart. Pyne could develop into a productive college quarterback, but first, he needs more time in the Matt Balis strength program and significant in-game reps.
The wild card is Tyler Buchner, who is one of the most anticipated Notre Dame recruits in recent memory. Although he will enroll early, it would be a tall task for him to learn the offense and be ready to start for the Irish on September 5th in Tallahassee.

Coan is a perfect stop-gap quarterback for Notre Dame. He can take the reigns for a season while the younger players like Pyne and Buchner continue to develop. All that said, nothing is a guarantee. There will still be a quarterback competition, and it will be a major storyline for the Irish this offseason.
