Could Kelly start a true freshman in 2021?

Heading into camp, the quarterback position is going to be highly scrutinized, as whoever is taking over, is taking over for a legend in Book. The Irish have won ten-or-more games for four straight seasons, and with a solid recruiting class coming in, there is no way that Kelly is going to allow a let-down year in 2021.

So, where does the Irish go in terms of the quarterback position, as Book is gone, and they have a couple of options available to them. Drew Pyne and Brendon Clark return in 2021, and the team got word that Jack Coan will be transferring from Wisconsin, and he was once a starter for the Badgers who completed 70 percent of his passes.

However, Tyler Buchner is coming in as a true freshman and is one of the higher-rated recruits in this year’s class. Does he have the talent and mindset to come in and start right away in South Bend? Or, will Kelly go with a veteran to start, and possibly hand the reigns off to a true freshman as he did over a decade ago?

Luckily for Buchner, his offensive coordinator has been down that road before and knows exactly what it takes to start as a true freshman at Notre Dame. Whoever takes over for Book has big shoes to fill, and whether or not that will be a graduate transfer, a holdover, or a true freshman, we will just have to wait to find out.
