The Notre Dame Men’s Basketball team has been stuck in a rut as of late, winning their last game before Christmas against an overmatched Bellarmine squad. Since then, they have lost four straight ACC games, including back-to-back matchups against top-25 teams in Virginia Tech and Virginia.

Through the losing, there have been bright spots like the play of forward Nate Laszewski, who is looking more and more like a 2021 NBA draft pick. On Saturday, the Irish looked to get their season back on track against Boston College, an ACC team that has also been struggling to string together wins.

As the two teams met up inside Purcell Pavilion, it was clear that Laszewski was going to be the focal point early, as he and Juwan Durham dominated out of the gate. In the end, it would be the play of the point guard who would seal the win, as Prentiss Hubb not only scored 13 points against the Eagles but also did a much better job distributing the ball.

Hubb and Durham post double-doubles for Notre Dame Men’s Basketball

Hubb, who is going to need to facilitate more if the Irish want to turn their season around, notched a season-high ten assists in the 80-70 victory. He played a complete game, grabbing some steals, shooting 3-of-7 from beyond the arc, and staying out of foul trouble, which proved huge down the stretch.

Durham not only scored 12 points for the Irish, but he also added 11 rebounds, while Laszewski scored 16 on 7-of-10 shooting. Guard Dane Goodwin led the Irish with 21 points.

The Irish seemed in control throughout, but the Eagles made a serious run late in the second half, pulling within six with a little under seven minutes left in the game. However, after a Laszewski layup gave the Irish an eight-point lead before a Goodwin three pushed the lead to double-figures, and Notre Dame was able to take care of business the rest of the way.

This was a crucial win for the Irish, who won their first ACC game and will now have to wait eight days before they take on the University of Miami (FL) on the road. Notre Dame has only 13 games left in the season to make a run towards a possible tournament appearance, and four of those games are against currently ranked opponents, making this win ever more important.
