When the Notre Dame football program got the commitment from St. Joseph Regional (NJ) High School running back Audric Estime, memories began flooding back for me. My younger brother, Brent Weiss, was a multi-state title-winning quarterback at St. Joes, playing with guys like Devin McCourty, Jason McCourty, and Junior Galette.

The school, located in Bergen County NJ, plays a hotbed of premier football programs, including the likes of Don Bosco and Bergen Catholic. All three of these schools have produced plenty of NFL players, and some who have gone on to win multiple Super Bowl rings, and become Pro Bowlers.

In Estime, the Notre Dame football team is not only bolstering their running back room but doing it with someone who could end up being an all-time player at the school.

Notre Dame football is getting a special talent in Estime

There is no doubt that Estime is a special talent, as he was able to accomplish some mind-blowing numbers playing against elite talent every week. The NJ Player of the Year, Estime ran for an eye-popping 1,857 yards in only eight games this past season, finding the end zone 22 times, and leading St. Joes to a 6-2 record.

He did all of this during a COVID season that threatened sports in New Jersey early on but was still able to put his head down and dominate. A bruising back with blinding speed, Estime is joining an Irish backfield that already has a talent in Kyren Williams, the ACC’s Rookie of the Year in 2020, and Chris Tyree, another blazer with track speed.

While Williams and Tyree figure to carry the load, at least early on in 2021, Estime is going to get his chances to shine in Year 1 in South Bend. I know firsthand the kind of talent that this school produces, and how good the talent is in Bergen County, NJ, and in Estime, the Irish are getting the best player that has come through those doors in a long time.
