Notre Dame Football: What players have a value similar to GameStop?

Over the past few weeks, we have seen the meteoric rise of the stock price of a company called GameStop, which trades under the stock symbol GME. You may be thinking, “Jack, what in the world does that have to do with Notre Dame football?” Well, nothing really. However, as a blogger, I am constantly looking for trends that can be woven into stories about Notre Dame athletics.

Here is my masterful attempt to do so.

GameStop was a company that had been written off by many business analysts. A few hedge funds shorted the stock, meaning they were betting on the stock price to fall.

What seems like a bleak situation for this company actually presented an opportunity for an online community to drive the price of the stock way up. Just this week, the stock price was about 20 times higher than it was at the beginning of January.

So, I thought to myself, “Which Notre Dame football player has a value that is similar to GameStop?”

This would be a player who has been written off to some extent. Someone with relatively low expectations heading into the 2021 season who could have a breakout season under the right conditions.

I combed through the roster for the upcoming 2021 football season and came up with a few potential candidates. One defensive player and two offensive players. Let’s start on the defensive side of the ball.
