Notre Dame football: George Takacs (Tight End)

George Takacs was a four-star prospect in Notre Dame’s 2018 recruiting class. After taking a redshirt during his true freshman season, Takacs saw the field for the first time as a sophomore in 2019. That year, he appeared in six games and caught two passes for twelve yards and a touchdown.

This past season, Takacs still only had a limited role in the offense. He appeared in ten games and caught three passes for 30 yards. One of those catches came on a crucial third down in Notre Dame’s win over North Carolina.

It is fair to say that Takacs’ time at Notre Dame has been underwhelming, especially if you compare it to the path of Tommy Tremble, who was also in the 2018 recruiting class and is now preparing for the 2021 NFL Draft.

When you are playing in the same position group as Michael Mayer, you are probably going to be overlooked to some extent. As a result, I think the expectations for Takacs this upcoming season are relatively low.

All that said, there are a couple of factors that make me want to buy stock in Takacs this season.

First, he has an opportunity to solidify himself as the number two tight end in Notre Dame’s offense. I mentioned that Tremble decided to leave Notre Dame a year early to pursue the NFL. In addition to that, Brock Wright is also leaving following his fourth season with the Irish.

An expanded role in 2021 will give Takacs a greater chance to be productive.

Second, he plays in an offense that loves (and I mean LOVES) to utilize multiple tight end sets. Notre Dame’s offensive identity last season under offensive coordinator Tommy Rees revolved around the running game and the use of multiple tight ends.

Lastly, the Irish landed a pro-style quarterback via the transfer portal this off-season. Jack Coan is transferring to Notre Dame from Wisconsin and is the favorite to win the starting job. Having an experienced quarterback like Coan leading the offense is promising for the Irish passing game.

In Coan’s last season with the Badgers, tight end Jake Ferguson recorded 33 catches, 407 receiving yards, and two touchdowns.
