Notre Dame football saw Kyren Williams blossom into a bonafide star during the 2020 college football season, as he took the ACC by storm. In a weird season that saw the Fighting Irish have to join a conference, Williams became the Rookie of the Year of the conference, one that has some of the best football players in the country.

Looking back, nobody could have seen the kind of impact Williams would have, as he played his best ball in the biggest games, including the team’s shocking overtime victory against then-No. 1 Clemson. All told, Williams rushed for over 1,000 yards for the Notre Dame football program in his first full season as a starter, becoming a Freshman All-American along the way.

As he enters his second season as the starting running back, he is joined once again by Chris Tyree and incoming freshmen like Audric Estime and Logan Diggs, but he should once again be the featured back.

Notre Dame football star Kyren Williams ranked outside of top-10 returning running backs

Recently, Pro Football Focus put out a list of the top running backs returning for the 2021 college football season. Led by Auburn’s Tank Bigsby, who dominated as a true freshman this past season, the list featured the top-10 players coming back, and incredibly, Williams was not listed.

It is hard to see how a player who helped his team to a College Football Playoff by rushing for over 1,000 yards, while also contributing over 300 yards through the air, would be passed over on this list. Williams plays for a big-time program, had some big-time moments last season, and will be counted on to carry the load even more in 2021.

Of course, these lists are never accurate, and it likely does not affect how Williams plays in any way this upcoming season. However, there is no way you can make a list of the top running backs returning to college football in 2021 and not have him listed, but I guess he will just go out and put up incredible numbers once again.
