One of the cornerstone players of the 2021 recruiting class for Notre Dame football is quarterback Tyler Buchner. Viewed as the heir-apparent to Ian Book, Buchner arrived early in South Bend and is already getting a jump on what is hopefully a very successful college football career.

In 2021, Buchner is going to get a chance to see the field, and we argued this past week that he needs to definitely get some game action in Year 1 at the school. Whether or not he plays in four games and redshirts, which is allowed, or starts the entire way, fans of the Notre Dame football program want to see him under center this Fall.

Notre Dame Football QB Tyler Buchner named No. 1 player to make an instant impact in 2021

In a recent piece by Connor Muldowney from Saturday Blitz, he listed the top-three incoming players who will make an instant impact in 2021. Wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. came in at No. 3, with Blake Fisher listed as No. 2, and quarterback Tyler Buchner took the top spot.

If Buchner comes in and wins the job from guys like Jack Coan, Brendon Clark, and Drew Pyne, that means he had a terrific spring and summer. That bodes well for the future of this Notre Dame football program because it certainly is not easy to start in South Bend as a true freshman at the quarterback position.

Buchner did not play during the 2020 high school season due to COVID-19, but the last time he took the field, he proved he could dominate with his arm and his legs. That is the kind of talent that is going to help him win a lot of games with the Irish, hopefully, sooner than later.

The early odds are that Coan is going to come in and start, as he has a ton of experience, leading Wisconsin to a Big Ten title game two years ago. It is a fairly deep position group heading into 2021, with Buchner and fellow freshman Ron Powlus III joining the room, but replacing Book is going to be  paramount to a successful 2021 season.
