The Notre Dame football team added a veteran linebacker to the room on Thursday, as former Michigan linebacker Adam Shibley announced he will walk on in South Bend. The Irish have one of the best linebacker coaches in all of college football in Marcus Freeman, so it makes a lot of sense that Shibley would want to continue his collegiate career at Notre Dame.

Shibley announced his intentions on Instagram on Thursday night:

It did not take Shibley long to pick the Irish to finish out his college career, as he just entered the transfer protocol last week, deciding to leave the Wolverines program. According to his Instagram post, Shibley has always dreamed of playing at Notre Dame and will get a chance to join a position group led by some veteran talent this upcoming season.

Notre Dame football has talent at linebacker returning

Even though Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, the team’s best linebacker, and defensive player is leaving, the Irish do have talent returning at linebacker. Drew White will lead a veteran group that includes the likes of Shayne Simon, Jack Kiser, and Marist Liufau to name a few.

As stated earlier, Freeman is an elite mind when it comes to linebackers, so if Shibley can make the team, he will be learning from the best in the business. In addition to the veterans returning, the Irish also added two quality true freshmen this offseason in Prince Kollie and Kahanu Kia, two players who are expected to challenge for playing time in Year 1.

This won’t be the first time that Shibley has had to climb the mountain as a walk-on, as he walked on at Michigan too, and after playing sparingly in 2019, he actually started five games for the Wolverines this past season. Shibley racked up 20 tackles in those five games, including two for a loss, and it will be interesting to see what he can bring to the table in South Bend.
