Notre Dame Football: 3 things to keep an eye on defense this spring
Marcus Freeman’s impact on the linebacker group
Not only was Marcus Freeman an elite hire in terms of the defensive coordinator spot, but he is also widely regarded as one of the best linebacker coaches in football. In fact, he was offered an NFL job with the Tennessee Titans before the 2019 college football season, so his work with the linebackers is known on all levels.
At Notre Dame, he will be taking over a veteran group, but one that lost their leader in Owusu-Koramoah. Still, Drew White returns to the middle of the unit, and he has not only vets around him but also a nice group of young freshmen joining the group in Devin Aupiu and Wil Schweitzer, who both enrolled early, as well as Prince Kollie and Kahanu Kia.
Kollie is widely regarded as the most college-ready of the bunch, and someone who is going to be a star in South Bend.
Overall, this is an exciting group of veterans and freshmen on the defensive side of the ball, and there are plenty of starting spots available after the mass exodus of talent after the 2020 college football season. Freeman and his staff have their work cut out for them, but there is plenty of talent left over, and he is certainly the right guy to have to steer the ship on that side of the ball.
