Notre Dame Football: 20 biggest wins of the Brian Kelly era

12. Notre Dame 33, Iowa State 9 (2019)

The 2019 Notre Dame team had its issues, particularly with inconsistency, but they still deserved to be in a New Year’s Six game after a ten-win regular season. Unfortunately, due to bowl tie-ins, Virginia made the Orange Bowl with only nine wins and a loss to Notre Dame.

So, they ended up in the Camping World Bowl against Iowa State, instead.

The game itself was never close. Claypool’s first quarter, leaping touchdown showed that Notre Dame had Iowa State beat on a purely athletic level. As Jafar Armstrong ran into the endzone, between Iowa State field goals, it was clear the Irish were there to bully Iowa State.

By the time the game was over it was a 24-point deficit.

This is a game that a lot of people pointed to as a game the Irish could likely lose, but they dominated instead. It was a bowl win where Notre Dame asserted their dominance and built momentum for an unbeaten regular season in 2020.
