Notre Dame Football: 20 biggest wins of the Brian Kelly era

8. Notre Dame 21, Virginia Tech 20 (2019)

At the time, the 2019 season was in a precarious place. Losing to Georgia was to be expected, but the blowout loss to Michigan was humiliating, with offensive inconsistency plaguing the Irish. Then, Notre Dame was trailing late to a down Virginia Tech team.

Ian Book would have to do something that head coach Brian Kelly would later say he had not done before in 2019, practice or game, run a successful two-minute drill.

Against Virginia Tech, he did. That image of Ian Book scrambling into the endzone against Virginia Tech became one of the great images of the 2019 season and gave the Irish a boost of confidence that they needed going forward.

This was a week after the disaster against Michigan, and the offense was looking pretty awful. However, from this point on the offense didn’t score less than 33 points per game, which was in their bowl against Iowa State.
