Notre Dame Football: 3 things to keep an eye on offensively this spring

Who becomes QB1?

Last season, Brendon Clark and Drew Pyne were the backups to Ian Book, with Pyne serving as the No. 2, and getting a snap in the College Football Playoff when Book left for a play. Heading into the 2021 college football season, Clark and Pyne return and will be joined by a graduate transfer in Jack Coan, who led the Wisconsin Badgers to a Big Ten title game the last time he was a full-time starter at the FBS level.

Coan is a very accurate passer, and while he does not make plays with his feet the way Book does, he is certainly capable of leading this team to wins. Incoming true freshman Tyler Buchner is considered by many to be the future of the quarterback position in South Bend, but he did not play in 2020 due to COVID restrictions in the state of California, so bringing him along could take longer than expected.

Replacing Ian Book is not going to be easy, as he not only got the job done on the field but was a leader in the locker room for this Notre Dame football program. My best guess is that Coan gets the start, being that he has the experience, and this program is ready to win-now, but expect to see Buchner get playing time in spots this season, before possibly redshirting.
