Notre Dame football has found their quarterback for the 2022 class, as Thursday evening, New Jersey quarterback Steve Angeli made it official and committed to the Irish. The Irish staff offered just four quarterbacks this cycle, and Angeli was the first of those offers from offensive coordinator Tommy Rees.

Since they offered back in August, the Irish have been the perceived favorite for quite a while, and I don’t think that ever really budged. Angeli stayed strong, patient, and eventually got the green light to make his choice, which was pulling the trigger for the Irish and making it official.

At the time of his commitment, Angeli held 23 offers from the likes of Stanford, Oregon, Miami, and many others.

What will Angeli bring to the Notre Dame Football program?

The 6’3 215-pound quarterback will bring size and a strong arm, and he is someone that has strong makeup, especially when he’s in the pocket. He won’t outrun you by any means, but he has solid feet that help him maneuver well inside the pocket.

While a lot of people won’t find him as a sexy quarterback pickup because of the lack of “athletic abilities,” there won’t be many quarterbacks with the football IQ he has. Angeli is a very smart player, doesn’t make a lot of mistakes, and can pick you apart if he has the protection around him.

He’s someone that can lead a program, and it’s obviously a big reason the staff gravitated towards him over other top quarterbacks in the country. It should be interesting to see him develop once Tommy Rees gets his guy to campus, but one thing is for sure, and that’s that Rees was all in from the start with Angeli.

With Angeli’s commitment, there are now eight pledges in the 2022 class, five offensively and three on defense. With the quarterback position now locked up, I’m sure the staff will want to add some big-time skill players around him as soon as possible.

I’d also expect the staff to start evaluating the 2023 class, which is always a plus to get a jump on. Angeli will have a nice opportunity to boost his recruiting ranking if he’s able to get to some camps and play football this season, which I expect to be the case in New Jersey this Fall. The Irish also have their eyes on Drew Allar, so his recruitment will be something to keep an eye on now that Angeli has committed to the Irish.
