The Notre Dame Football program has an absolute star in TE Michael Mayer, and he could be the best TE prospect since Kyle Pitts.

Looking at the Notre Dame Football team, there are a lot of players to be excited about heading into the 2021 college football season. They have one of the best defensive backs in college football, an elite running back, and their tight end absolutely dominated as a true freshman last season.

That tight end is Michael Mayer, who is quickly becoming one of the best players in the country at his position group. During the 2020 campaign, Mayer quickly drew the respect of opposing teams, putting together an incredible first season in South Bend, and starting the whispers of whether he could be the best tight end to ever come through Notre Dame.

While it may be early for that, the early returns have been outstanding, and he could end up being a top draft pick in a few years, much like Florida’s Kyle Pitts.

During this draft season, Pitts is getting a ton of publicity, and some mock drafts feel he is the best overall player in this entire draft class. Seeing a tight end go in the top-5 is a bit of a shock, but he is that good, and in today’s NFL, teams need his kind of skill set at the tight end position to make the next step.

Down the road, Mayer could be that kind of prospect, as he has proved he can be a big-play guy in the passing game, and is not afraid to go out and hit someone. Also, he has the size like Pitts, who stands 6-foot-6, to be an absolute menace in the red zone, using every bit of his 6-foot-5 frame to come down with balls.

Looking at the best teams in the NFL, they have the tight end position as a strength, including the Kansas City Chiefs, who have ridden Travis Kelce to two straight Super Bowls. If Mayer continues to blossom over the next two seasons, there is no reason why he cannot round into a top-10 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, getting the kind of hype Pitts is now.
