5. Find a Deep Threat

Wide receiver was far and away the biggest issue with the offense in 2020. In a way, that was a surprise as receivers have always been a strength under Brian Kelly. In 2021, it could very well be the biggest issue again in 2021. Still, if they want to thrive offensively, they’ll need to find a deep threat.

Given Jack Coan’s issues going deep at Wisconsin, he’ll need all the help he can get in South Bend.

Finding a deep threat opens the entire offense up for the team. If you have an outside threat who can go deep, it forces a safety to always play back and to that side of the field. In turn, this opens up the underneath for tight ends and slot receivers to get open with fewer defenders clogging the middle of the field.

This also keeps a lighter box, which will help the offensive line get to the second level and open holes for Kyren Williams and the other backs to gash opposing defenses. It’s kind of like the old adage that you need to establish the run to set up the pass in reverse, to stretch the field to set up the run.

If Notre Dame Football can find a deep threat, and there are options here from developing current players to the transfer portal, the offense will be in much better shape= Finding a deep threat is vital to getting the offense going and making it back to the College Football Playoff.
