Notre Dame Basketball: Mike Brey to return for 2021-22 season
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame Basketball program has a strong nucleus returning in 2021-22, and Mike Brey will be back at the helm of the Irish.
The Notre Dame Basketball program has not made it to the NCAA Tournament on the Men’s side in quite a while under Mike Brey, and there were millings of him getting fired after another disappointing season. However, due to COVID, and the Irish actually playing better towards the end of the season, it appears Brey is going to be back again.
Notre Dame Basketball was able to get a huge win to close out their regular season, beating No. 11 Florida State, and then won a first-round matchup in the ACC Tournament at the buzzer. The following night, they were blown out by North Carolina, ending their run, but apparently, it was good enough to bring the head coach back next season.
Notre Dame Basketball has Mike Brey returning in 2021-22
On Wednesday, Brey told Stadium that he would be back in 2021-22, and is looking forward to getting this team to the NCAA Tournament. The Irish were led by mostly juniors this past season, and are losing only Nikola Djogo and Juwan Durham this offseason, so a lot of talent is returning.
For the Irish to rebound, they must continue to see growth from Nate Laszewski, who should have gotten more consideration for the Most Improved Player in the ACC this past season. Prentiss Hubb was third-team All-ACC at point guard, and all three leading scorers return next year on an offense that will certainly be fun to watch.
With solid recruits coming in, and a veteran-laden lineup, you have to think Brey can get this team back to the tournament. The Irish should be able to have a normal offseason and play without so many COVID-19 restrictions in 2021-22, which will go a long way for these talented incoming freshmen.
