Notre Dame Football: Is the next Michael Mayer on his way?
By Brad Weiss
The Notre Dame Football program is starting to get more and more elite players and could be in line to nab their next Michael Mayer.
When it comes to the 2021 Notre Dame Football team, the Irish have returning some elite talent on both sides of the ball. On offense, Kyren Williams returns after a 1,000-yard season as a redshirt freshman, and at tight end, Michael Mayer will look to build on a breakout freshman season.
After Mayer, the position group has some solid talent as well, but one player who could arrive in 2022 would be the heir-apparent.
Notre Dame Football in the mix for a four-star TE in 2022
The Notre Dame Football team is starting to recruit with the biggest of programs, and as it stands right now, they have the No. 2 overall draft class in the 2022 recruiting cycle. When it comes to the tight end group, the Irish have one of the best in the country in Mayer, and his replacement could be on his way.
According to Saturday Blitz, the Irish are now trending when it comes to four-star Georgia tight end Holden Staes. This is a kid who is widely regarded as one of the best prospects in a prospect-rich State and would be an excellent fit with the Irish in South Bend.
Rated the No. 7 tight end in the country according to Rivals, Staes is 6-4, weighs 230-pounds, and is incredibly athletic. He would be a perfect fit to take the mantle from Mayer, who will likely be gone after the 2022 college football season.
The Irish have a tremendous history in developing tight ends under Brian Kelly, so you can be sure they are going to be one of the final teams standing for Staes when all is said and done. For Notre Dame Football, the future is looking brighter and brighter seemingly every single day, and Staes would be another key player in getting this team over the hump in big games.
