Notre Dame football: Way too early awards for 2021

Rookie of the Year

Tyler Buchner-QB

Is there a quarterback who has come in under Brian Kelly with more hype than Tyler Buchner? Brandon Wimbush was highly regarded, but Buchner is being looked at as a near savior to the program-the guy to take them to elite status.

That’s a lot of pressure on a guy just finishing high school to live up to, but Buchner, however, seems to be the guy who can stand up to it, though.

Now, it’s worth pointing out that Buchner is not likely to start in week 1, or will at least be sharing time. Brian Kelly and company brought in Jack Coan for a reason, to bridge the gap between Ian Book and Tyler Buchner while mentoring Buchner.

Expect Coan to start week1.

However, if Everett Golson was proof of anything, it’s that Kelly is willing to play a freshman quarterback if their potential outstrips the veteran on the roster. So, while there are plenty of exciting incoming freshmen, none have the potential that Buchner does to win over the fanbase and become a sort of Rookie of the Year.
