Notre Dame football: Way too early awards for 2021

Comeback Player of the Year

Jack Coan-QB

Remember that stuff about Kelly potentially playing Buchner over Coan because of his potential and Coan’s limitations? Forget it. Coan is going to start week 1 unless there is a major surprise in spring and summer practice because Buchner hasn’t even played since his Junior year of high school.

By now you know that Coan comes as a graduate transfer to Notre Dame from Wisconsin, where he lost his job after being injured. Now, he’s coming back from that injury on a new team that has the potential to be going to a New Year’s Six Bowl.

A healthy Coan who plays to his 2019 level will be great for Notre Dame, who wants to run the ball anyways. Still, if he can provide a consistent passing attack he’ll have earned being the Comeback Player of the Year, and if he can be as accurate as he was at Wisconsin, and win big games as he did there, this was a perfect one-year stopgap.
